Day 3: New Shira Camp to Baranco camp
Elevation: 3840 to 4876 (Lava Tower) to 3860
Trip time: 6 hours
Long road from New Shira camp to Baranco camp – the longest day in the climb starts
Good start of the day
It started to get cloudier at about 9am
You can determine age by looking into number of leaves – almost like trees.
Did I say that it was a long day?
It was foggy until we get to Lava tower
Shira and Machame route join together at this point

Me and Lava Tower in the background – the highest point of today’s hike. Elevation is more than 4800 meters, 400 meters higher than Mt. Rainier.
I pointed where we need to go
I am hiding under a rock to eat food and drink some water. It was wet snowing all the time we were near Lava Rock.
Then it started pouring – really good test for my rainshell
Going down from Lava Tower to Baranco camp
No need for sun screen
Eva lost her guide (or guide lost her) and we “saved” her by going to Baranco camp together.
As we go down, climate changes and we see more vegetation

Drying my sleeping bag in the morning sun
Day 5: Baranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Elevation: 3860 to 4200
Trip time: 4 hours
Breaking through Baranco Wall
It was the most technically difficult part in a climb.
Kiss rock – path is so narrow that you literally kiss rock trying not to fall
Climbing after playing XBOX the whole night
My bag is on the right and the porter who carried my bag is on the left
This wall at Karanga valley looks like it was man-made.
Night at Karanga Camp with lights of Moshi in the valley below us
Morning at Karanga camp. Today is a big day – 4 hour trek to Barafu camp, short sleep and then all night we climb all the way to the summit
In all camps there are toilets for porters and for tourists. Both are nasty.
